www.spsg.de/en/palaces-gardens/object/charlottenburg-palace-old-palace/

Christien Smits, KVVAK reiscommissie

Het is ‘work in progress’.

Looking back at the KVVAK Young Scholars’ Symposium 2023

On 17 June the KVVAK organized the 1-day Young Scholars’ Symposium in Asian Art 2023, the fourth symposium in the series of KVVAK Young Scholars’ Symposia. The symposium was entitled ’New perspectives on Asian art and material culture’, because all of the presenters (BA and MA students, PhD candidates and early career researchers) presented work that offers new perspectives and approaches to the art and material culture of Asia and the exchange between Asia and Europe.

From the closing remarks from Anne Gerritsen, Chair of Asian Art: “We heard an amazing range of papers, covering a wide range of countries (including Vietnam, Korea, Japan, China, France, Britain, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Peru); a variety of surfaces (pith paper, ceramics, metal, wood, skin); numerous different types of objects (from coaches and matrices to prints and cabinets), via lots of different disciplines: anthropology, art history, history, cultural studies, history of collecting, material science and restoration, empire and colonial history. What a wonderful range! But it was especially wonderful to have these papers delivered by such a varied group, bringing all kinds of ideas, identities, experiences, outlooks, perspectives, thoughts, analyses and questions to bear on their research. Where would we be without all of you? And when I say ‘we’: I mean we here in the museum, we the members of the KVVAK, we in academia, we here in the Netherlands. We need people like all of you to contribute to this clearly very dynamic and wide-ranging field of art and material culture of Asia!”

This event has been made possible thanks to the help of numerous individuals and organizations. The include the KVVAK, Ikigai (KVVAKk’s young professions’ network), the Rijksmuseum, and the National Museum of World Cultures. The symposium was supported by the Chair of Asian Art at Leiden University, in turn sponsored by the KVVAK, the Hulsewé-Wazniewski Foundation, the Isaac Ailion Foundation, the Jan Menze van Diepen Foundation, J.M. Boll (1942-2020) and P. Boole-Kruseman and the heirs of E. Veder-Smit.

The KVVAK is especially grateful for the generous support of Pauline Kruseman and the Van Gulik Estate. Thanks to their financial contribution, we could make this symposium such a memorable event at the Rijksmuseum.

Het was alweer even geleden.

The Memoirs of a Hong Kong Art Addict.

Collecting China Jean Theodore Royer (1737-1807), collections and Chinese studies Jan van Campen Engels

During a relatively short period, from around 1765 to 1780, the Dutch lawyer Jean Theodore Royer (1737-1807) was intensely engaged in the study of Chinese culture. Befriended VOC officials and their Chinese relations in Canton collected Chinese objects for him and helped him with his greatest ambition: the composition of a Chinese dictionary. The objects were given a home in his museum on the Herengracht in The Hague. Better than travel journals, they gave a picture of life in China in Royer’s time. Because the selection was largely made by modest Chinese traders, the collection does not so much give a picture of the material culture of the Chinese elite, but rather that of the ambitious, upwardly-mobile world of small traders and craftsmen. These are mostly ephemeral objects that have rarely been preserved, but they came to The Hague, thanks to Royer and his Chinese contacts. A bequest from his widow then ensured that the collection ended up in two Dutch museums: Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where the objects are still present today.

Bekijk boek

Prijs: €30,-

Small China Early Chinese miniatures Koos de Jong Engels

Small China presents Chinese miniatures from 5,000 BCE up to the 15th century. The pocketsize representations of supernatural beings, people, animals, or everyday objects are virtually uncharted in East Asian crafts – even in China, these objects in jade, bronze, ivory, and porcelain are little known. Koos de Jong explores their arcane meanings and traces their production and the market for such treasures, which, contrary to official secular and religious art, include those devoted to taboo subjects such as erotica or humour. The miniatures had many different functions, from insignia, fetishes and devotional objects to burial gifts or toys. They could express good wishes or even serve as bribes. A rare glimpse into the everyday life of ordinary people and into Chinese handicrafts from thousands of years ago!

Bekijk boek

Prijs: €64,-

Bekijk boek

Prijs: €99,-

Re-envisioning Śiva Naṭarāja A Multidisciplinary Perspective Anna Slackza Engels

Re-envisioning Śiva Naṭarāja. A Multidisciplinary Perspective offers new insights into the dancing Śiva as icon and concept. Each of the seven essays in this volume addresses an aspect of the Naṭarāja (a specific form of the dancing Śiva) that has been until now untouched by scholars, or one for which the research is here moved substantially forward. Through the use of hitherto unexplored materials – murals, prints, icons, Sanskrit iconographic and ritual texts, Tamil inscriptions, and the analysis of metal alloys and casting techniques – old views are checked and challenged, and new ideas are proposed. Combining a wide range of fields of expertise, the volume will add to our knowledge about this well-studied, but poorly understood icon. With contributions by Anna A. Ślączka, Anna L. Dallapiccola, Nicolas Cane, Leslie C. Orr, Richard H. Davis, Sharada Srinivasan, Libbie Mills, Corinna Wessels-Mevissen.

Bekijk boek

Prijs: €59,-

Bekijk boek

Prijs: €39,-

In your article written together with Sara Creange for the June 2021 issue of Aziatische Kunst, you elaborate on an important, but less-studied image of Śiva from the Chola period (900-1250) in the KVVAK’s collections. In its formal characteristics, this Śiva, known as Chandraśekhara, or ‘the moon-crested one’, follows a specific South Indian textual prescription. Śiva carries a moon in his crest, and holds an axe in his right hand, and a tiny deer in his left hand. You write that the moon alludes to moon-related myths, while the axe and deer refer to the myth of the Pine Forest. Śiva is almost always shown with a moon, but this combination with the Pine Forest myth is specific to Tamil images of Śiva. Could you tell us about one such moon-related myth and the Pine Forest myth? And why do you think this specific combination was so popular in the South? What might the combination of two myths symbolize?

Indeed, the crescent moon on Śiva’s head is much more than just an adornment. It is associated with many mythological stories. One of the most popular myths tells about the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha (who, in fact, are the 27 constellations) given in marriage to Chandra, the moon god, under the condition that he will treat all of them equally. Chandra failed to keep the promise for he fell in love with and subsequently favorised Krittika and Rohini, the two most beautiful wives, neglecting the others. On hearing that, Daksha cursed him saying that from now on, each day he will lose one of his sixteen digits and will finally disappear altogether. When the sixteenth day arrived, Chandra, reduced to one-sixteenth of his volume and terrified, approached Śiva asking for help. Śiva placed the final digit of Chandra in his hair and assured him that he will gradually regain his lost parts, but then will lose them again, one by one, and the sequence of waning and waxing will go on as long as the universe lasts. But the crescent may also symbolize a bull’s horn and be a survival of the ancient bull cult seen in the iconography of Śiva. Or it may allude to Śiva being associated with fertility and healing (the same as the moon).

The Pine Forest myth tells us about Śiva being upset with a group of ascetics, residing in a forest of pine trees, who perform various rites and austerities but do not worship him. In order to teach them a lesson, Śiva takes the form of a handsome mendicant and, accompanied by Vishnu disguised as a beautiful woman, enters the forest. While Vishnu attempts to seduce the ascetics, Śiva encounters their wives who, because of his divine power, are immediately attracted to him. Seeing this, the ascetics grow angry. Unaware of the true identity of the intruder, they kindle a fire, chant mantras, and produce a series of magical weapons and animals from the flames, among them an axe and a deer, which they throw towards Śiva. Śiva, however, catches them one by one and overpowers them. At the end, he stands on the back of another malicious creature, the dwarf, and performs his famous dance.

The Pine Forest myth is a southern ‘remake’ of an old pan-Indian myth. The axe and the deer are therefore typically South Indian attributes of Śiva – they are held by other, typically South Indian manifestations of Śiva, such as the Somaskanda, but do not occur in the North – and, presumably, stress the importance of this myth in the South. On the other hand, it is also possible that the myth is only a nice way to explain the peculiar South Indian/Tamil iconography of the God, whose origins we may never know. It is a little like the question what was first: the hen or the egg…

Finally, the combination of the axe/deer and the moon: as all images of Śiva carry the moon, this combination is nothing special but rather something to be expected.

2. The article includes a fascinating report of the technical study of the Śiva image using neutron tomography. The Chandraśekhara image was subjected to this analysis a few years after the technical study of the famous Natarāja image, also in the KVVAK’s collections. The article describes the Chandraśekhara image as not necessarily finely modeled, yet of a high-quality bronze, with an individualistic face and elaborate ornaments. Particularly the tiger-claw pendant with metal inlay is exceptional. You write that the image may have been the product of a local workshop. What might this special pendant and its use of precious metal inlay tell us about the community that sponsored the image?

The discovery of a different material inside the pendant is already fascinating news. Such a discovery is one of a kind and, to my knowledge, there are no earlier occurrences of ornaments of Chola-period bronzes being made of another material. But to properly answer this question we must first be absolutely sure what material the pendant is made of. If it is mercury, then we could dare the hypothesis that the image was commissioned by, or for, someone practicing (or following) ayurvedic healing or alchemy. Which would make it an even more fascinating discovery. But to ascertain this, more research is necessary. Therefore, we hope to be able to do additional checks by means of gamma spectroscopy at PEARL, Reactor Institute, TU Delft, which should clear any doubts.

Aziatische Kunst Auteursinterview: 2021/1

1. Dr. Nardi, in your upcoming article, you carefully study four Nathdwara paintings in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. The Rijksmuseum’s Nathdwara paintings from the late 19th and early 20th century are assumed to have been produced for pilgrims and devotees who visited the town of Nathdwara and the Śrī Nāthjī temple. They illustrate the celebration of different festivals at the temple as part of a tradition that is still carried on today. Can you tell us about your personal experience of a particular celebration at the temple?.

I have visited the temple three times. On the first two occasions I simply witnessed the regular seva, that is one of the daily rituals you often see depicted in the paintings. Last time I went, in March 2019, it was a very different experience. I happened to be there during the celebrations of Holi. After entering the temple with a big crowd of devotees, I walked through the Nij Mandir where, in fact, I was hardly able to see Śrī Nāthjī because I was pushed out of the hall by the multitude of people. At that point, I had no choice but to follow the crowds to another courtyard where, on a high platform, there were priests playing Holi. They were throwing red gulal both to an icon standing on the platform – I assume it was Navnītpriyjī but couldn’t go close enough – and to the ecstatic pilgrims. Soon after entering that congested space a big ball of red gulal hit my face. I remember I couldn’t breathe for a few seconds and then a very intense rose perfume pervaded my sense of smell. The priests mixed gulal with rose essence oil, which was a pleasing surprise. I will never forget that moment, I felt like I had truly experienced the temple as a devotee participating in the action and the excitement of the moment. Just imagine, I was like one of the spectators you see in Figure 1. Also notice that, while the head priest is allowed to take photographs in the temple premises, he is always careful to cover with a dot the icons in the photographs as a way to protect them.

2. Three of these beautiful watercolor paintings are depictions of a form of Krishna known as Śrī Nāthjī. You write that the Śrī Nāthjī image was seen, not as a man-made sculpture, but as a self-manifested icon. This icon was one in a series of nine such icons, collectively known as the “Nine Treasures”, but Śrī Nāthjī was by far the most important of these “Treasures”. Is there a particular reason for the exceptional popularity of Śrī Nāthjī compared to the other icons?

Yes, there is. While the primacy of Śrī Nāthjī is attested in sectarian literature (see for example the ‘Chronicle of the Manifestation of Śrī Nāthjī’), the icon’s current hierarchical position within the sect can only be explained with the rules of primogeniture and seniority of the Vallabha Sampradaya which were established after the death of Vitthalnath. I’ll try to explain in brief: when Vallabha died in 1531, the sect was entrusted to his son Vitthalnath and, with his death, the spiritual leadership passed to his seven sons who inherited the exclusive right to initiate new disciples. This subdivision of spiritual authority led to the establishment of seven lineages, each headed by a priest who is a male descendant of Vallabha and Vitthalnath. The head priests of the seven lineages are also the caretakers of one (or more) of the nine icons (navnidhis), which are considered repository of legitimacy and power. Vitthalnath’s eldest son received Śrī Nāthjī and also established the primacy of the first lineage based on seniority. The same lineage is also responsible for the small portable metal icon of Navnītpriyjī which is used in specific rituals like the Nanda Mahotsava explained in the article.

3. I understand that in your research of visual images from Nathdwara, you will also be looking at photographs. Could you tell us a little bit more about the photographs and how they differ from the paintings with regard to both usage and the subjects depicted?

At the end of the nineteenth century, Nathdwara witnessed a great deal of artistic experimentation both in terms of iconography and technique. This is when photography started to play an increasingly important role, something that I have elucidated in Portraits of Devotion (Mapin 2019).

This experimentation was in part due to a redefinition of patronage. While for many years painting at Nathdwara served the temple priests, royalty and wealthy devotees, now also regular pilgrims commissioned paintings and wanted their portraits in them. While skilled artists like Ghasiram were known for painting true to life portraits, the camera offered an even faster and effective way to produce them.

Traditional painters arranged their studios so that they could take photographs of the devotees but, at this time, photography was not used in a straightforward way, it was subverted to please a specific audience of pilgrims. In fact, one of the most interesting innovations was the production of images in a mixed media technique, such as figure 2. This features a depiction of Śrī Nāthjī next to a priest in the traditional Nathdwara painting style, and the portrait of the commissioners in a “photographic” style. This was achieved by gluing their photographs to the surface of the painting, skillfully retouching their face with pigments. The result is quite interesting, mixing traditional painting and photographic aesthetics.

Archival evidence shows that by the mid-twentieth century, photography became even more popular. Figure 3 is a classic example: it is a black and white photograph capturing a family of devotees posing next to a painted image of Śrī Nāthjī in a studio. The work was lightly tinted to add some details to a work that was otherwise considered flat and unattractive by its commissioners.

These works were hung on the walls of private houses where they become mementos of a pilgrimage to Nathdwara. Today they are increasingly becoming popular with art dealers who procure them in old havelis to sell them in the art market.
